Quotes to Write By

I suppose one of my guilty pleasures is reading through pages upon pages of quotes.
Today I'm going to go through some that have really helped if not improve my writing, then inspire me as a writer.
"You don't really understand an antagonist until you understand why he's a protagonist in his own version of the world."
-John Rogers
Most writers, at least beginner writers, are really only excited to write and express the actions and feelings of their hero character and his/her supporting characters. However, only the best books have villains and antagonists who are more than just evil, but have depth, realistic motives, and human characteristics that readers may even relate to because, after all, all antagonists--if they aren't us now--were us.
This quote made me motivated to fall in love with my villains and develop them into a 3-dimensional person instead of just a God-he-sucks kind of character.
What is your antagonist/villain fighting for? Why is he/she doing the right thing in their mind? What are they feeling? What do they struggle with? What's their backstory? There's so much more to them than simply hating the protagonist! Fall in love with your characters and their personal story!
"Don't forget--no one else sees the world the way you do, so no one else can tell the stories that you have to tell."
-Charles de Lint
One of the biggest obstacles as a writer, I feel, is getting past the overwhelming feeling of: No one wants to read this. This isn't important. I'm sure this has been done before.
Yes, there are logically only so many base concepts for books, which is why I find this quote so beautiful. There are so many books being written just this second alone, especially during NaNoWriMo, but every writer, every person, sees the world in a totally unique way--the world and their characters speak to them in a way that is different from how the world and your characters speak to you.
What you're writing is important. What you're writing is beautiful. What you're writing is all your own.
"I am a writer. The characters I create aren't me. They are a part of me. They are a part of me who is
the adventurer
the romantic
the warrior
the princess
the hero
the villain
the freak
the friend
They are the parts I hide. The parts I wish to be. The parts I have been and the parts I will be.
Every story is based on a truth. Your truth."
-unkown
I LOVE this quote!
Authors are their books. I put myself into every facet of my stories. Every word, every action, every gut-wrenching feeling is somehow a part of me--the good, the bad, and the ugly. I firmly believe that is one of the things that makes writing so incredible is that you breathe through your books and they, in turn, breathe through you.
Don't be afraid to show your vulnerability, your strength, your deepest feelings, every part of you, while you're writing! It makes your story just that much more special.
